Building the Future of Digital Marinas

In 2025, Prelect took a major leap forward in modernizing Norway’s marinas. As a technology partner in the Plug Smarthavn project, we helped develop and roll out a new digital foundation that makes marinas smarter, safer and far more energy efficient.

Five sites are already upgraded, and the industry is now moving into a real phase of digital transformation.

From traditional marinas to modern, data driven energy hubs

Marinas are experiencing rapid electrification. More vessels depend on shore power, grid capacity is becoming strained, and day to day operations are increasingly complex. Through Plug Smarthavn, we addressed these challenges by creating a technical ecosystem that enables:

• Real time control and optimization of energy use

• Cross site monitoring of infrastructure

• Smarter operations through high quality data

• Future services such as flexibility and load balancing

This is more than a technology upgrade. It is a shift in how marinas can be operated.

A complete lift from infrastructure to cloud

Prelect coordinated and delivered a comprehensive digital upgrade across multiple sites. This included new control systems, improved telecom infrastructure and a flexible automation platform that adapts to different hardware types and marina layouts.

One of the most significant steps forward is the central data platform, collecting operational data using open standards such as OPC UA and OCPP. This ensures marinas are not only smarter today, but prepared for the next decade of electrification and digital services.

Innovation in action

Large digitalization projects always bring surprises, and 2025 was no exception. When technical and operational challenges appeared, Prelect stepped in to keep the momentum strong:

• Designing new solutions for critical components

• Building custom software based on open source technologies

• Identifying and validating new technology partners

• Securing progress without compromising safety or performance

These challenges became catalysts for creativity and resilience, strengthening the final solution rather than slowing it down.

From pilot to rollout; 5 marinas already live!

Rosendal and Storebø served as full scale test environments. Systems were installed, refined and validated in real operational conditions.

With successful pilots behind us, five marinas are now fully upgraded, and additional sites are under way throughout 2025.

In parallel, we are building a growing dataset that will help Plug make better decisions around energy use, operational patterns and future investments.
